There are many things to consider when it comes to building and maintaining your SEO, but we’re going to go over the Top 5 Successful SEO Strategies that you’ve likely put on the back-burner!
It’s true- a lot of business owners who know about SEO forget about these simple SEO strategies and how important they are. And, if you’re new to SEO altogether, you might think it’s all going to happen overnight using one simple strategy. That’s just not the case.
When it comes to SEO, you shouldn’t, and simply can’t, leave anything on the back-burner! It’s important to identify where you can improve and what you’ve been neglecting.
When used properly, these strategies can quickly and drastically improve your ranking!
- Revise Your URL. A flat URL used to be preferred from an SEO perspective, but now, that is not the case. It needs to be logical to help search engines understand what your website is about.
So, what do you need to do?
-Change the default permalink settings.
-Publish your second-level pages, and then create corresponding blog categories.
-Make sure the exact website addresses for your blog categories exactly match those of your second-level pages.
Why is this important?
It’s important because search engines will determine the value of your website by analyzing your content from each page and how much of it relates back to your other page/content. Each website has different pages within different layers. Say layer one is your homepage, your second-level pages are your basic information pages about your business and what you do, and your blog posts are your third-level pages. Each third-level page will appear as a sub page of a second-level page, adding more authority to the second-level pages, and therefore more credibility to your website, resulting in better SEO.
2. Get rid of low-quality/low-traffic pages. This is one of the simplest, most effective ways to get better SEO!
Search engines will only count a certain number of pages on your website, so you want the content you *do* have to be the most credible, valuable, and overall great quality information. It’s vital to “trim” low-quality content pages and pages with little or no traffic in order to boost your website’s SEO.
What should you get rid of?
-Pages that are no longer needed or relevant.
-Pages that don’t add much value to your website.
-Thin content (content with less than 500 words).
-Pages with very low volume keyword phrases.
(Tip: If you have multiple pages you could lump into one, single page, do that!)
*Don’t just randomly delete pages, though. You could lose your best content.
With only the most valuable and high-traffic content on your page, your overall quality of website will improve dramatically.
3. Improve Page Speed. Page speed is one of the most important things you can do for your SEO! This is a great one to get on NOW, because it offers a great return on investment, considering it can be done using minimal effort, time, or money, and makes a significant improvement, fast.
What Should You Do?
-Get away from discount web hosting! It is better to go with someone who is slightly higher in cost but offers a better package, than these commonly used, super-slow shared hosting accounts. *This is generally the biggest improvement you can make.
-Reduce your number of installed plug-ins. The fewer http requests, the faster your page will load.
-Make sure your media is properly sized and optimized. Images and video can have a significant negative impact on page speed! The average person doesn’t think about the file size or dimensions of an image, and what they don’t realize, is that if the image is significantly larger than what they should use for their website, and they just upload it, they can get a big reduction in page speed.
*A typical photo taken from a smartphone can be up to 40 times larger than it needs to be for use on the web. If you include just a few of these unoptimized images on your web page, it can dramatically slow down your website.
-Choose the proper image size, and compress the image when you can.
-For videos, choose MP4 when you can, compress the video file, minimize video length, and always upload videos on YouTube instead (and use their embedding code).
4. Build and trim internal links. Internal links can make a great impact on SEO- and create a positive user experience (UX).
Internal links help search engines find and understand more of the pages within your website. From UX perspective, they help people find the content that answers their questions while keeping them on your website longer.
What Do You Need To Do?
-Realize you want internal links, but don’t want to flood people and overdo it.
Try limiting internal links to one every few paragraphs.
-You could use internal links from any relevant pages to all of the pages in your top-level navigation that cover your products/services.
*EXTREMELY IMPORTANT- Since you’ll be trimming any low-quality pages, you’ll also want to get rid of any internal links that are no longer relevant or no longer available. All broken links need to be gone! Nonexistent or broken links are bad for SEO!
5. Use Existing Relationships
There is a lot of value in high-quality links (backlinks) when it comes to SEO. It’s difficult to earn those links, but think of it this way: If it was easy, everyone would do it! A lot of your competitors will give up on this. Don’t let that be you!
What Should You Do?
-Try emailing people you already know, it’s far more likely to be opened by them than someone you don’t know. It’s often times not a good idea to email and beg people you don’t know to link to your website.
Something to remember: What good is it to earn more traffic to your website, if you’re not producing good content? If you don’t have existing relationships to get backlinks, start creating those relationships now! Be communicative on social media and make friends. Support their businesses, and you’ll quickly gain those helpful, supportive relationships!
